Formal Pharmacy Tech Training

Formal pharmacy technician training requires both classroom and laboratory work in a variety of areas, including medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy record keeping, and pharmaceutical techniques. They must also learn Pharmacy Law and Ethics. Technicians also are required to learn medication names and their actions, uses, and doses.

Because they are such a vital part of the pharmacy industry, pharmacy technicians must be able to accurately follow instructions. Attention to details is a must for them because it could mean the difference between the life and death of a patient.

By federal law, all pharmacists and technicians are required to maintain patient confidentiality. The health care profession takes patient confidentiality very seriously. It means that the discussion of patients medical conditions, medications, therapy and personal information outside of the pharmacy is strictly prohibited. Serious consequences can arise from breaching this confidentiality, including losing ones certification permanently. The importance of patient confidentiality cannot be stressed enough.

The annual salary for pharmacy technician in hospitals is approximately $34,000 per year. Pharmacy technicians who are willing to work evenings or weekends and those who are experienced have the potential to earn much more. Most hospitals also provide full benefits, including paid vacation and sick leave, medical and dental insurance, and retirement plans. more info
